Problem
When I try to insert a quotation or citation into a Word document, I get an error message that Citavi couldn't find Word or that Word is not installed on this computer or is not installed in a compatible version.
Cause 1
An instance of Word is still running in the background (either due to a crash or a preview in Windows Explorer).

Solution 1
Right-click the Taskbar and click Start Task Manager. On the Processes tab, click the Image Name WINWORD.EXE and then click End Process.

Cause 2
You are using Office Click-to-Run or Office Starter

Solution 2
Citavi cannot work with Office 2010 Click-to-Run, because "out-of-process applications" (such as Citavi) are not supported in Click-to-Run. (Office Starter is always Click-to-Run.) You need to uninstall Office Click-to-Run and install the full installation of Office. Additional information on Click-to-Run can be found in Microsoft's Frequently Asked Questions.
Cause 3
Word was started with administrator rights but Citavi was not.

Solution 3
Please follow these instructions to change the setting.

Cause 4
A copy of Office 2007 was installed on the computer and later uninstalled.

Solution 4
In the Windows Control panel, check Programs and Features for a program called Microsoft Office 2007 Primary Interop Assemblies and uninstall it if present. Create a restore point first, since it is possible that other programs rely on the Primary Interop Assemblies and may break after it is uninstalled.
Cause 5
You previously had two versions of Office installed at the same time and then uninstalled one of them. When the one installation was uninstalled, entries in the Windows Registry remained which now are confusing Citavi.

Solution 5
Try using Microsoft's Fix it tool: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971179/en
Cause 6
The Word installation is damaged.

Solution 6a
Repair the Office installation from the Windows Control Panel:
  • In Windows 7 or 8
  • On the Start menu, click Control Panel. Then, click Uninstall a program. Click the version of Microsoft Office in the list of programs. Click Change. Select Repair and continue with the assistant. Restart your computer.
  • In Windows Vista
  • On the Start menu, click Control Panel. Then, click Uninstall a program. Click the version of Microsoft Office in the list of programs. Click Change. Select Repair and continue with the assistant. Restart your computer.

Solution 6b
Reset your user and registry settings in Word using Microsoft's Fix it tool: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822005/en

Solution 6c
Uninstall Office and reinstall it after restarting your computer.
